Train Your Mind for Peace and Purpose Every Day
Jay Shetty
This book originally came up in discussion on the fitness floor at the gym with a trainer I worked with years previous. I had already followed Jay Shetty via his “On Purpose” podcast and I certainly resonated with his message. Still, I didn’t run out and get a copy of the book just yet. Instead, I enrolled in Jay’s coaching program and spent the better part of a year honing that school under his tutelage.
Despite years of catching Jay’s podcast, and spending so much time being mentored through his teachings, I realize now how little I actually knew of his journey. This book wonderfully shares his journey as a monk through journal entries and storytelling. Often we see the result, but what we are not witness to is the journey. Not only does this book provide an inspiring journey, but the author masterfully brings ancient wisdom and traditions and makes them relatable and useful in everyday modern life.
Chapter after chapter and page after page, Jay’s compassion for humanity and passion to share wisdom are made evidently clear.

Negativity is a trait, not someone’s identity. A person’s true nature can be obscured by clouds, but, like the sun, it is always there. And clouds can overcome any of us. Jay Shetty: Think Like a Monk

When we find ourselves judging others, we should take note. It’s a signal that our minds are tricking us into thinking we’re moving forward when in truth we’re stuck. Jay Shetty: Think Like a Monk
In English, we have the words “empathy” and “companssion” to express our ability to feel the pain that others suffer, but we don’t have a word for experiencing vicarious joy – joy on behalf of other people. Perhaps this is a sign that we all need to work on it. Jay Shetty: Think Like a Monk
Revenge is the mode of ignorance – it’s often said that you can’t fix yourself by breaking someone else. Jay Shetty: Think Like a Monk

Success doesn’t guarantee happiness, and happiness doesn’t require success. Jay Shetty: Think Like a Monk
Happiness can be elusive – it’s hard to sustain a high level of joy. But to feel meaning shows that our actions have purpose. They lead to a worthwhile outcome. We believe we’re leaving a positive imprint. What we do matters, so we matter. Jay Shetty: Think Like a Monk
Monks believe that the man won’t be fulfilled when he finds his fortune, and that if he continues his search for meaning, the answer will always, eventually be found in service. Jay Shetty: Think Like a Monk
If we live intentionally, we sustain a sense of purpose and meaning that isn’t tied to what we accomplish but who we are. Jay Shetty: Think Like a Monk
Dharma is passion in the service of others. Your passion is for you. Your purpose is for others. Jay Shetty: Think Like a Monk
If you try to change everything at the same time, they will all become small, equal priorities. Change happens with small steps and big priorities. Pick one thing to change, make it your number one priority, and see it through before you move on to the next. Jay Shetty: Think Like a Monk
